A Twenty Decade Rosary

This writing was, in itself, an act of devotion. In this entry I offer a combination of traditional (Dominican and Popular), doctrinal, and scriptural materials to compose a “complete,” twenty decade Rosary prayer series—with focused meditations attending every Hail Mary in the sequence. Comprising all four sets of mysteries placed in chronological order, from the Annunciation to Mary to the Accession of Mary (which, I know, is usually known as The Coronation but I have a thing for alliteration). Wherever I have made my own contributions, I have done my best to maintain doctrinal consistency—to the point of including, at times, language directly from scriptural, catechetical, or encyclical sources. I hope it may serve as a guide to your own prayerful meditation and, if not already a habit, might inspire you to take up this unique devotional practice.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

O Lord, open my lips and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me.

O Mary, my Mother, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary,
I dedicate myself entirely to you,
and as proof of my devotion,
I consecrate to you this day,
the faculties of my mind,
the senses of my body, my heart, my soul,
my entire being.
Preserve and protect me always as your loving possession.

O Queen of the Holy Rosary,
Mother of God, and my Mother,
you who have great power in heaven,
who never refuses the prayers of your loving children who trust in you,
obtain for me the favors so near to my heart.
I ask them through your Most Holy Rosary,
our beautiful heritage, given through St. Dominic,
for the help and consolation of your loving children.
O Blessed Mother,

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Annunciation

Upon arriving, the angel said to her: “Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” (Lk 1:28)

Let us receive the fruit of humility that we might prepare to accept the Lord’s messenger, hear His promise, and be fulfilled by His greatest blessing.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. The Visitation

Mary set out, proceeding in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah, where she entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. (Lk 1:39-40)

Let us receive the fruit of charity that we might have regard for the law of human solidarity and joyfully share the gifts God has bestowed on us.

The Nativity

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Lk 2:7)

Let us receive the fruit of poverty that we might appreciate what we have, feel no envy, and be devoid of selfishness.

The Presentation

When the day came to purify them according to the law of Moses, the couple brought Him up to Jerusalem so that He could be presented to the Lord. (Lk 2:22)

The Temple

On the third day they came upon him in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Lk 2:46)

The Baptism

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. And when Jesus had been baptized… he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” (Mt 13:16)

The Wedding

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee… When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (Jn 2:1-5)

The Proclamation

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel. (Mk 1:15)

Let us receive the fruit of repentance that we might make the first step in returning to the Father from whom we have strayed by sin.

The Transfiguration

While Jesus was praying His face changed in appearance and His clothing became dazzling white. And behold two men were conversing with Him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His exodus that He was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. (Lk 9:28-31)

Let us receive the fruit of longing for holiness that we might never cease in its pursuit.

The Supper

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body” (Mt 26:26)

Let us receive the fruit of adoration that we might offer a proof of gratitude, an expression of love, and perform our duty toward Christ our Lord.

The Agony

His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Then he rose from prayer and came to his disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted with grief. (Lk 22:44-45)

The Scourging

Pilate’s next move was to take Jesus and have him scourged (Jn 19:1)

The Crowning

They stripped off his clothes and wrapped him in a scarlet military cloak. Weaving a crown out of thorns they fixed it on his head, and stuck a reed in his right hand. (Mt 27:28-29)

The Cross

So they took Jesus; and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. (Jn 19:16-17)

The Crucifixion

Keep me, O Blessed Mother,
in conformity with the Divine Will.
When sin calls me away from God,
may I be mindful of the wounds sin inflicts.
Against the spirit of pride
impress upon me the memory of Christ’s humiliation.
When I would stray from the path of virtue,
remind me of the way of the Cross.
Let me never forget the dying Christ
as He forgave His enemies
and gave you to me as my Mother. Amen.

The Arising

He has been raised up; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. (Mk 16:6)

The Ascension

Then, after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his seat at God’s right hand. (Mk 16:19)

Let us receive the fruit of hope that the promise to come will keep us from every despair of today.

The Aspiration

All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them. (Acts 2:4)

Let us receive the fruit of the love of God that we might use the gifts of the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Assumption

You are the glory of Jerusalem, the surpassing joy of Israel; you are the splendid boast of our people. …God is pleased with what you have wrought. May you ever be blessed by the Lord Almighty forever and ever! (Judith 15:10-11)

Let us receive the fruit of the grace of a holy death that we might join our Blessed Mother in the eternal glory of God’s light.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Accession

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev 12:1)

Let us receive the fruit of trust in Mary’s intercession that we might find our prayers answered with motherly love.
